Mongolian Silk Nativity

This colorful silk nativity is crafted in Mongolia by Dorjkhand, an elderly single mother who cares for her own mother and grown son. She graduated in 1973 in the only major available at the time, which was doll crafting during the Soviet regime in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Dorjkhand has continued to create paper and clay sculptures, and is still learning and refining her impressive skills. In this set Mary is holding baby Jesus, and the clothing style is from the 13th Century Great Mongol Empire. Joseph and the wise men are about six inches high, but the shepherds in this set are smaller, because the shepherds in Mongolia are children.
