You are here:Home > India > Barmer Blockprinters

The Barmer region of the state of Rajasthan, India, is the home of very talented artisans specializing in wood block printing and other traditional arts. These artisans live in scattered desert villages, their biggest challenge being poverty and the underdevelopment of their isolated communities. To address these problems, these artisans are now organized into cooperatives and Elevita is helping them market the centuries-old art of block printing. The tablecloths we carry are made in the villages of Bagru and Sanganer. Over 200 families work on these products, using natural dyes to produce red, black and indigo patterns on unbleached cotton fabric. Your purchase will not only help each one of these families, but will also help improve the isolated, impoverished community in which they live.
